Requiem from a Dumpster

In a recent conversation, a friend lamented that during the notorious "Summer of Love" the vestments that the Church threw into the dumpster, the hippies recovered and wore on parade around the streets of San Francisco- with nothing underneath.
This horrific story reaffirms my hoarding instinct to buy up and "rescue" anything that was once used in the sacred liturgy, like this Requiem stole and maniple.

 -August 22, the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary-
"Come on kids, let's take the rest of the homeschool day off and go on an excursion!"
Was it a coincidence that we wandered down that particular street and I found myself glancing through that particular store window?  Was it a fluke that on that particular morning the shopkeeper put out the "exotic French textiles" that had been sitting in the storeroom gathering dust after an unsuccessful first run? 
And there it was shimmering in the window, that same metallic fringe I had seen before.
Yes, the Immaculate Heart of Mary will triumph!

    Great post as usual. I'm sure your children learned from and enjoyed this very special home school day! Do you have a link for the horror in S.F. you mentioned? I hadn't heard of it before.

Processional Litter & Flowers for the Feast of the Assumption

This year for the Feast of the Assumption, the pastor of our little country parish asked if I would help create a processional litter for the statue of Our Lady.    He had the great idea of repurposing an old table!  It seemed Our Lady was smiling down on me that day when I walked into the thrift store and there it was for twenty dollars: a perfect square, three foot, solid oak table. A few months ago, my kind friend, mentor, and owner of Altarations Paraments in Oregon sent me a box loaded with remnants of liturgical fabric.  I added a white skirt around the bottom to hide the table legs and a carpenter attached brackets for the removable oak rods.  I was a bit nervous about creating the arrangements for the litter. Christ the King: Altar Flowers

Altar flowers for the feast of  Christ the King! The challenge with these arrangements was to incorporate the traditional colors of white, gold and red with the request from a dear friend to provide flowers for the church upon the celebration of her son's nuptial Mass.   The bride selected autumn colors for her bridal bouquet: burnt orange, dark red and rose.  I thought it would be best to select flowers that could be used for both the wedding (on the feast of St. Raphael Archangel) and the feast of Christ the King.  Let me know what you think!  Entry table arrangement Side altar arrangement Another entry table arrangement Main altar arrangement Roses and lilies with acacia, eucalyptus and blueberry greens.
